This model differed from the preceding general issue Model 1879, primarily in a new, flat, leaf rear sight usually known as the “Buffington” sight, capable of adjustment and correction for wind and rifling drift. The weight of the .45-70-405 bullet was increased from 405 grains to 500 grains, to improve powder combustion of the cartridge, making it more complete by use of a heavier and slower bullet.
Our specimen is marked “U.S.” “MODEL” “1884” in three lines on top of the breech block. The lock plate is marked “U.S.” “SPRINGFIELD” and eagle. The bands are marked “U”. The top of the butt plate is marked “US”. The serial number is 491307. The left side of the stock has an inspector’s cartouche “SWP 1890”. The left side of the barrel is marked “V” “P” eagle head, “P” “I”. The bottom of the stock is marked “P”. The scabbard is marked “JEJ”.
